From Student to Speaker: My Journey at Petlja Summer Programming School

This summer marked a significant milestone in my educational journey. I had the incredible opportunity to speak at the Petlja Foundation Summer Programming School - not as a student this time, but as a speaker alongside Mateja Srejić.

The Full Circle Moment

Just a mere 4 years ago, I was sitting in the audience, absorbing everything I could about programming, algorithms, and problem-solving. The Petlja Foundation played a crucial role in shaping my technical skills and passion for computer science.

Now, standing at the front of the room, I couldn’t help but reflect on how far I’ve come. It was both humbling and inspiring to see eager young faces looking up at me, ready to learn.

What I Shared

Turning knowledge into practice

I discussed how to use what you’ve learned for good, being a creator of your own future through meaningful projects and events.

Real-World Applications

I shared examples from my own projects, showing how programming knowledge can be useful in every aspect of project development, from planning and design to implementation and testing.

The Learning Journey

Perhaps most importantly, I emphasized that learning to program is a journey, not a destination. Every expert was once a beginner, and the key is persistence and curiosity.

Working with Mateja Srejić

Having Mateja as a co-speaker was an incredible experience. His expertise and teaching style complement different aspects of programming education. Together, we were able to provide students with a comprehensive view of the field.

Lessons Learned

Teaching Deepens Understanding

Preparing to teach others forced me to examine my own knowledge more critically. Explaining complex concepts in simple terms is a skill that benefits not just students, but also the teacher.

The Importance of Mentorship

Being in a position to guide others reminded me of the mentors who helped shape my journey. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly.

Youth Potential is Limitless

The questions and insights from the students were remarkable. It reinforced my belief that young people, when given the right opportunities, can achieve incredible things.

Looking Forward

This experience has strengthened my commitment to education and mentorship. Whether through EduCompass or other initiatives, I want to continue creating opportunities for young people to learn and grow.

The cycle continues: today’s students become tomorrow’s mentors. I’m excited to see where these talented young programmers will take their skills and what problems they’ll solve.
